Heavy Smoke Visible Across City as Firefighters Battle Long-Duration Industrial Blaze
BRAMPTON – A large industrial fire at a scrap metal facility in Brampton triggered safety warnings for nearby residents and motorists on Tuesday afternoon as thick black smoke filled the sky and reduced visibility across parts of the city.
The fire broke out at a scrap yard located near Intermodal Drive and Goreway Drive, north of Highway 407, shortly after 4:20 p.m. Emergency crews responded quickly and remained on scene for several hours battling the blaze.
Brampton Fire and Emergency Services confirmed that no injuries were reported as firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to surrounding areas.
Due to the heavy smoke generated by the incident, residents living nearby were advised to keep windows and doors closed and turn off ventilation systems as a precautionary measure. Motorists were also urged to avoid the area as smoke significantly reduced visibility on local roads and sections of Highway 407.
Fire officials described the incident as a long-duration operation, requiring specialized firefighting techniques and extensive resources. Crews used a combination of water and foam while working closely with facility operators to separate and access burning materials within large piles of scrap metal and debris.
Environmental agencies were notified and monitored the situation as a precautionary measure.
The thick plume of smoke was visible from several kilometres away and drew significant public attention. Authorities reminded residents not to approach the scene, emphasizing that the nature of materials involved in industrial fires can present unknown health and safety risks.
Despite concerns from residents and commuters, nearby transportation infrastructure, including operations at Toronto Pearson International Airport, remained unaffected.
As firefighters continued their efforts into the evening, road closures and traffic disruptions gradually eased and all affected roads were later reopened.
