Brampton to Take Over Waste Collection Services in Major 2027 Transition

The City of Brampton is preparing to officially assume responsibility for waste collection services beginning Oct. 1, 2027, as part of the broader transition of services currently managed by the Region of Peel.

Brampton City Council has now been presented with a comprehensive implementation plan developed jointly with the Region of Peel, the City of Mississauga and the Town of Caledon aimed at ensuring a smooth and coordinated transition of waste collection responsibilities.

Under the proposed arrangement, the City of Brampton will oversee garbage, organics, and yard waste collection services both within Brampton and on behalf of Caledon. Recycling services, however, will continue to be handled separately by Circular Materials, meaning residents are not expected to see changes to existing recycling programs.

Officials say the shift back to local municipal management marks a return to the model that existed before regionalization in the 1990s and is expected to improve operational efficiency, speed up decision-making, and provide municipalities with greater flexibility to address local growth and service priorities.

The current waste collection contract operated through Peel Region will remain in place until Sept. 30, 2027, while transition planning continues over the next year involving staffing, governance, operational logistics, and financial coordination between all participating municipalities.

City officials emphasized that residents should continue following the Region of Peel’s waste collection schedules and Circular Materials recycling guidelines until the official transition date. Peel Region’s Community Recycling Centres will also continue operating under regional ownership after the transition.

The City of Brampton says residents will receive advance notice regarding any future changes to collection schedules, waste guidelines, or service updates as the transition moves closer to implementation.
