Air India Slashes International Flights Amid Fuel Crisis and Global Instability

Air India has announced major reductions and suspensions across its international network through August 2026 as soaring fuel prices, airspace restrictions and instability linked to the West Asia conflict continue to disrupt global aviation.

The airline confirmed that 29 international routes across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia will either be suspended temporarily or operate with reduced frequency.

Air India said the move is aimed at maintaining schedule reliability and avoiding widespread last-minute cancellations for passengers.

According to the airline, the decision comes amid:

  • Record-high jet fuel prices
  • Ongoing airspace restrictions over parts of West Asia
  • Longer flight paths increasing operational costs
  • Reduced commercial viability on some international routes

Despite the reductions, Air India emphasized that it will still operate more than 1,200 international flights monthly across five continents.

Major Impact on Canada and North America

Canadian travellers will be among the most affected by the temporary cuts.

Canada Routes

  • Delhi–Toronto reduced from 10 weekly flights to 5 weekly flights through July
  • Daily Toronto service expected to resume in August
  • Delhi–Vancouver reduced from 7 weekly flights to 5 weekly flights

United States Routes

  • Delhi–Chicago temporarily suspended
  • Delhi–San Francisco reduced from 10 weekly flights to 7 weekly flights
  • Delhi–Newark temporarily suspended
  • Mumbai–New York (JFK) temporarily suspended
  • Delhi–New York (JFK) continues daily
  • Mumbai–Newark increased from 3 weekly flights to daily service

Europe Services Also Reduced

Several European destinations will see fewer weekly flights:

  • Delhi–Paris reduced from 14 to 7 weekly flights
  • Delhi–Copenhagen reduced from 4 to 3
  • Delhi–Milan reduced from 5 to 4
  • Delhi–Vienna reduced from 4 to 3
  • Delhi–Zurich reduced from 4 to 3
  • Delhi–Rome reduced from 4 to 3

Australia and Asia Hit Hard

Flights to Australia have also been scaled back:

  • Delhi–Melbourne reduced from daily to 4 weekly flights
  • Delhi–Sydney reduced from daily to 4 weekly flights

In Asia and Southeast Asia:

  • Delhi–Shanghai suspended
  • Chennai–Singapore suspended
  • Mumbai–Dhaka suspended
  • Delhi–Malé suspended
  • Multiple reductions announced for Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Kathmandu, Colombo, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City routes

Why Airlines Are Struggling

The airline industry is facing mounting pressure due to geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil shipping route through which nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply passes.

Restricted airspace and longer detours are significantly increasing:

  • Fuel consumption
  • Flight duration
  • Crew costs
  • Aircraft operating expenses

Industry analysts warn the situation could continue if instability in the Middle East worsens.

Financial Pressure on Air India

Air India is reportedly dealing with losses exceeding Rs 22,000 crore in the last financial year.

The airline is also considering additional cost-cutting measures, including:

  • Optional meal services on some routes
  • Reduced bundled premium services
  • Possible changes to lounge access benefits

Support for Passengers

Air India says affected passengers will be offered:

  • Alternative rebooking options
  • Free date changes
  • Full refunds where applicable

Travellers are being advised to regularly monitor flight schedules and booking updates through official Air India channels before travelling.
