A fresh diplomatic controversy has erupted after Donald Trump reposted a social media message referring to India as a “hellhole,” prompting a sharp response from New Delhi.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs strongly criticized the remarks, calling them “uninformed, inappropriate and in poor taste,” while stressing that they do not reflect the true nature of India-U.S. relations.
Government spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the comments were inconsistent with the long-standing partnership between the two democracies.
He added that ties between India and the United States have been built on mutual respect and shared interests.
The statement is being seen as one of India’s clearest public rebukes of Trump in recent months.
Trump reposted a message attacking America’s birthright citizenship law. The post also targeted immigrants from India and China, making offensive claims about immigration and employment.
The comments quickly drew criticism from political leaders and community organizations in both countries.
Ami Bera, one of the most prominent Indian-American lawmakers in the U.S., condemned the remarks as offensive and beneath the dignity of the presidency.
The Hindu American Foundation also criticized the message, warning that such rhetoric could fuel racism and xenophobia.
The controversy comes just before an expected visit to India by Marco Rubio, who is anticipated to hold talks aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
It also follows recent friction over trade tariffs and Trump’s comments regarding tensions between India and Pakistan.
Relations between Washington and New Delhi are strategically important in areas such as:
- Trade and investment
- Technology cooperation
- Indo-Pacific security
- Defence ties
- Counterbalancing China’s influence
Because of this, public disputes of this kind often attract global attention.
India has made clear it rejects Trump’s remarks, calling them offensive and disconnected from reality. While diplomatic ties are expected to continue, the episode adds new strain to an important international relationship.
