Ticketmaster Pulls Ontario Resale Tickets Ahead of New Price Cap Law

Ticketmaster Canada has temporarily removed resale tickets for events in Ontario as it prepares for new provincial rules that will cap resale prices at face value.

The company says tickets previously listed by customers for Ontario events have been delisted while updates are made to its resale marketplace. Customers are expected to be able to relist tickets next week once the platform’s changes are complete.

A spokesperson for Ticketmaster said customers have been notified about the transition.

The move follows the Ontario government’s recent budget legislation, which includes a ban on reselling tickets above their original face value. While the bill still requires royal assent before becoming law, Ticketmaster appears to be adjusting its systems in advance.

The resale cap comes after years of complaints from consumers who said tickets for major concerts and sporting events were being quickly purchased by resellers and reposted online at dramatically inflated prices.

High-profile examples often cited by critics included seats for World Series games and The Eras Tour by Taylor Swift, where resale prices in some cases far exceeded original ticket costs.

Supporters of the cap say the change will make live entertainment more affordable and fairer for fans. Critics, however, may argue it could reduce flexibility in the secondary market or push some sales to unofficial platforms.

For Ontario consumers, the immediate result is a pause in Ticketmaster resale listings while the company prepares for the new rules.
