Ottawa — Canada’s federal government is stepping up oversight of emerging artificial intelligence risks as AI Minister Evan Solomon confirmed he will meet senior executives from Anthropic this week over concerns tied to the company’s new AI model, Mythos.
Speaking Monday, Solomon said government officials were scheduled to meet with Anthropic representatives immediately, followed by his own meeting on Tuesday. He added that Canadian cybersecurity agencies are actively engaged in assessing potential threats.
According to Solomon, the government’s top priority is protecting Canadians, sensitive data, and national institutions as the technology evolves rapidly.
Anthropic has stated it will not publicly release Mythos, but claims the system has already identified thousands of previously unknown software vulnerabilities across major operating systems and web browsers. Those claims have prompted heightened attention from governments and financial institutions internationally.
Reports indicate U.S. officials have convened major Wall Street banks to discuss possible cyber risks, while British regulators are also holding urgent consultations.
In Canada, the issue was discussed Friday by the Bank of Canada’s Financial Sector Resiliency Group, which includes the central bank, the federal finance department, and major Canadian banks.
A spokesperson for the Bank of Canada confirmed the group met to exchange information and assess developments related to cyber-related events.
