A night meant for student gathering turned into a scene of tragedy, as a fatal shooting at Lambton College has left one young man dead and two others injured, sending shockwaves through the campus and wider Sarnia community.
Police were called to the college’s campus bar shortly before 1 a.m. following reports of gunfire during a student-run event. When officers arrived, they found three individuals suffering from injuries. A 20-year-old man, later identified as Dane Nisbet, was rushed to hospital with life-threatening wounds but was later pronounced dead. Two others sustained injuries described as non-life-threatening.
Authorities have since launched a homicide investigation, with officers expected to remain on scene for an extended period as they work to piece together what led to the violence. As of now, no arrests have been made, and investigators have not confirmed whether those involved were students. Police have also indicated there is no evidence at this stage that the college itself was specifically targeted.
In the immediate aftermath, Lambton College announced the closure of its Sarnia campus for the day, suspending all classes and services as a mark of respect and to ensure safety while the investigation continues. The institution expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the victim’s family, friends, and all those affected by what it described as a “profound tragedy.”
Support services have been made available to students, staff, and community members grappling with the emotional impact of the event. The sudden loss of a young life—particularly one connected to the local hockey community—has intensified the sense of grief felt across the region.
Incidents like this resonate far beyond the immediate scene, raising concerns about safety in spaces meant for learning and connection. For communities across Ontario, including cities like Brampton and Mississauga, the tragedy is a sobering reminder of the unpredictable nature of violence and the importance of collective vigilance.
As the investigation unfolds, the focus remains on finding answers and supporting those affected. In the wake of such loss, a community now comes together—not just in mourning, but in the shared hope that justice and healing will follow.
