The City of Mississauga has approved a new policy banning the raising of all national flags except Canada’s at Celebration Square, with immediate effect.
The motion, introduced by Mayor Carolyn Parrish, cites growing controversy, community division, and increasing administrative and legal burdens linked to flag-raising events.
The decision follows recent tensions, including backlash over the raising of the Palestinian flag and pressure surrounding a planned Israeli flag event. Under the new rule, even previously approved flag raisings have been cancelled.
The ban also extends to lighting displays in national colours on the Civic Centre clock tower, limiting them to Canadian colours only.
While national flags will no longer be raised at city hall, they remain permitted on other city properties and at community-led events. The Community Recognition Program will continue to support charities and non-profits, but without national flag ceremonies.
