An internal investigation is underway at Peel Regional Police following allegations that officers may have cheated during a recent promotional exam process, raising concerns about fairness and transparency within one of Canada’s fastest-growing police services.
Officials confirmed they are “actively investigating” the matter but say it is still in the early stages. Details remain limited, including how many officers may be involved or the exact nature of the alleged misconduct.
“It would be premature to comment at this time,” a police spokesperson said, emphasizing that the review is being handled by the service’s professional standards unit.
The allegations come shortly after a large-scale round of promotions announced earlier this month by Chief Nishan Duraiappah. In what was described as the largest promotional process in the service’s history, 82 officers were elevated to ranks including sergeant and staff sergeant, following nearly 200 interviews conducted by senior officers.
Representatives of the Peel Regional Police Association also declined to comment, noting that no formal grievances have been filed so far.
The situation has drawn comparisons to a recent controversy involving the Toronto Police Service, where a senior officer admitted to sharing confidential interview information with selected candidates during a promotions process. That case led to disciplinary action and temporarily halted promotions within the service.
While it remains unclear whether the Peel investigation will impact recently announced promotions, the issue has already caught the attention of regional leadership.
Nando Iannicca, chair of the Regional Municipality of Peel and head of the police services board, said accountability is critical. He emphasized that any concerns about the integrity of promotions must be addressed thoroughly to maintain public trust.
“The Board will continue to exercise its oversight role to ensure accountability and maintain public confidence,” Iannicca stated, while noting that further comment would be inappropriate during an active investigation.
The probe comes at a time of significant change for Peel police, which is expanding rapidly amid increased funding and a wave of retirements.
