BRAMPTON — A major new grocery retail development is arriving in the city as Food Basics prepares to open a brand-new 32,000-square-foot store at 400 Queen Street West this week.
The opening follows the closure of its Bartley Bull Parkway location, which will shut its doors early at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, with the new store launching the very next day just a few kilometres away.
The new outlet is part of an expansion plan that will see eight new Food Basics stores open across Canada in 2026, with the Brampton location being the second to launch this year.
Staffing for the new store will include the full team from the previous Bartley Bull location along with 40 new hires, bringing the total workforce to approximately 90 employees.
Designed to reflect the diversity of the local community, the store will feature a tailored product selection including fresh meat and produce, locally sourced items, and popular in-house brands like Irrésistible and Selection. Customers will also have access to online grocery ordering at the same prices as in-store, along with rewards through the Moi program.
Company officials say the focus remains on affordability amid rising cost-of-living pressures. The retailer positions itself as a reliable discount grocer offering fresh and accessible food options.
As part of its community outreach, Food Basics is also contributing $5,000 to Knights Table, supporting local food security initiatives such as meal programs and food bank services.
Residents impacted by the transition can continue shopping at nearby locations on Vodden Street East and Hurontario Street in Brampton, as well as Saint Barbara Boulevard in Mississauga.
The opening marks another step in Brampton’s growing retail landscape, with increased focus on affordability and community-centered services.
