The Global Affairs Canada has issued a critical, time-sensitive travel advisory warning Canadians to avoid parts of Australia’s northeast as Tropical Cyclone Narelle approaches with potentially devastating force.
While Canada continues to advise travellers to take normal security precautions when visiting Australia overall, the alert specifically targets Far North Queensland, where the cyclone is expected to make landfall on March 20. The affected region includes areas from Lockhart River to Port Douglas along the Cape York Peninsula, extending west toward the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Officials warn that the storm could bring violent winds, torrential rainfall, flash flooding and landslides, along with widespread disruption to essential services such as transportation, electricity, water supply, communications and emergency response systems.
