Brampton Residents Invited to Grow Their Own Food Through Free Backyard Gardening Program

BRAMPTON, ON — Residents interested in growing their own fruits and vegetables can now register for the 2026 Backyard Garden Program, a free initiative by the City of Brampton aimed at improving household well-being and addressing food insecurity.

Now in its sixth year, the program provides participants with five bags of soil and a gardening seed sampler featuring easy-to-grow varieties such as lettuce, beans and carrots. Registration is now open, even though spring is still weeks away.

Since launching, the program has helped donate more than 20,000 pounds of locally grown produce to food banks and community organizations across Brampton, reinforcing the city’s commitment to sustainability and community support.

Participants are encouraged to grow food not only for their households but also to share surplus produce with neighbours and those in need. Interest in home food production continues to rise as grocery costs increase, with recent surveys showing nearly half of households now grow some food at home.

All registered participants must attend one in-person gardening workshop at Century Gardens Recreation Centre, scheduled for February 28 and March 7, with sessions offered in both morning and afternoon time slots. An online workshop option is also available for residents with accessibility or scheduling challenges.

The program is open exclusively to Brampton residents, with first-time applicants given priority. Registration details and eligibility information are available at www.brampton.ca.
