Peel Residents Get Reprieve as Ontario Extends Use of Blue Recycling Bags to May 30

Peel Region residents frustrated by uncollected blue recycling bags have been given a temporary reprieve, as Circular Materials has extended acceptance of blue recycling bags until May 30. The extension follows widespread confusion and complaints after Ontario’s new producer-funded recycling system took effect on Jan. 1, initially setting a March 1 deadline to end the use of bagged recycling.

Circular Materials, the not-for-profit organization overseeing the new system, confirmed that residents may continue placing blue recycling bags alongside blue bins for overflow materials until the end of May. Just days earlier, postcards sent to households warned that bagged recycling would no longer be accepted after March 1, prompting concerns from residents who rely on bags due to limited space.

The new recycling model shifts full financial and operational responsibility from municipalities to producers of packaging and paper products, while also expanding the list of recyclable items across Ontario. To address overflow issues, Circular Materials says additional recycling containers may be requested, and residents previously approved to use blue or clear bags because of space constraints can continue doing so without changes to their service.

Residents and city councillors have criticized the rollout, saying communication was late and unclear, with some recyclables left uncollected and cardboard blowing into streets. Mississauga Ward 6 Coun. Joe Horneck said frustration has largely been directed at the province and Circular Materials rather than the city, noting many residents only learned of the changes after they were implemented.

Circular Materials says it has confirmed with its contractor, GFL Environmental, that overflow recycling should not be left behind ahead of June 1. Residents experiencing missed collections are advised to contact customer service at 1-877-268-4351 or submit an inquiry through circularmaterials.ca/peel.
