The City of Brampton has launched the sixth season of its Backyard Garden Program, inviting residents to grow their own fruits and vegetables while supporting neighbours facing food insecurity.
Generously sponsored by Scotts Canada, Fieldgate Developments, Mattamy Homes and Paradise Developments, the program provides participants with five bags of soil and a gardening sampler seed pack containing lettuce, beans and carrots. The initiative is designed to help residents build practical gardening skills, improve personal well-being and contribute to community food support efforts.
Since its launch in 2020, the Backyard Garden Program has donated more than 20,000 pounds of locally grown produce to food banks and community organizations across Brampton. Participants are encouraged to donate surplus produce to help address local food insecurity.
To take part in the 2026 program, residents must register for and attend one mandatory in-person workshop beginning Jan. 26. The program is open to Brampton residents, with priority given to first-time participants.
Workshops will be held at Century Gardens Recreation Centre, Community Room 2, on Saturday, Feb. 28 and March 7, from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. An online option is available for those with accessibility needs or scheduling conflicts. Attendance is required to receive gardening supplies, which will be distributed at the end of March.
