City of Brampton to Celebrate Tamil Heritage Month and Thai Pongal with Flag Raising and Cultural Reception

The City of Brampton will mark Tamil Heritage Month and celebrate the harvest festival of Thai Pongal with a corporate community event at City Hall later this month.

The celebration will take place on Saturday, January 31, beginning with a community flag raising at Ken Whillans Square, followed by a cultural reception inside Brampton City Hall’s Atrium and Conservatory. The event runs from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and is open to residents.

January is recognized as Tamil Heritage Month in Canada, providing an opportunity to reflect on the history, culture and contributions of Tamil communities nationwide. Canada is home to one of the largest Tamil diasporas in the world, and Tamil Canadians continue to play a significant role in shaping the country’s social, cultural and economic life.

The month also coincides with Thai Pongal, a traditional four-day harvest celebration that marks renewal, gratitude and prosperity at the start of the Tamil month of Thai.

Presented in partnership with the Brampton Tamil Association and the Brampton Tamil Seniors Association, and sponsored by Algoma University, the event will feature traditional ceremonies, music and dance performances, along with complimentary Tamil cuisine.

Mayor Patrick Brown said the celebration is an opportunity to recognize the cultural traditions and contributions of Tamil Canadians to Brampton and Canada, while Regional Councillor Navjit Kaur Brar noted the event will help strengthen community connections and shared understanding.

Residents are invited to attend and experience the traditions, artistry and cultural heritage of Brampton’s Tamil community.
