Ford Transit tops list of cheapest vehicles to insure in Ontario in 2026, new analysis finds

A new analysis by Toronto-based insurance comparison platform MyChoice has identified the vehicles with the lowest average insurance premiums in Ontario for 2026, highlighting how vehicle choice can significantly affect annual costs for drivers.

MyChoice said its rankings are based on an analysis of more than 60,000 Ontario auto insurance quotes collected through its website in 2025. Quotes were grouped by vehicle make, model and year to calculate average premiums.

To ensure consistency, the company used a standardized driver profile for each vehicle: a 35-year-old married driver, fully licensed, with a clean driving record.

Insurance rates, MyChoice noted, are influenced by several factors, including vehicle type and repair costs, safety ratings, theft rates, usage, location, coverage options and the driver’s personal profile.

According to MyChoice’s analysis, the most affordable vehicles to insure include:

  1. Ford Transit vanEstimated annual premium: $1,248
MyChoice said the Ford Transit’s strong safety record, low theft rate and durable design make it a cost-effective option for insurance. The van is popular with business owners and families who need additional space.
  2. Mini Cooper Convertible$1,328
Despite being a convertible, the Mini Cooper ranks near the top of the list. MyChoice cited its compact size, strong safety features and good visibility as factors that help keep premiums relatively low.
  3. Subaru Forester$1,424
The Forester SUV’s solid safety reputation and moderate repair costs contribute to its affordability, making it one of the least expensive SUVs to insure in the province.
  4. Lexus GX460 / GX550$1,437
Luxury vehicles rarely appear on lists of low insurance costs, but MyChoice said the Lexus GX models are exceptions. High safety ratings, low claim frequency and Toyota-backed reliability help keep premiums lower than expected.

MyChoice has not yet released details for the remaining vehicles rounding out the top 10, but the company emphasized that practical design, strong safety performance and lower risk profiles are common traits among the most affordable vehicles to insure.

The analysis underscores how choosing the right vehicle can lead to meaningful savings for Ontario drivers in 2026, particularly as insurance costs remain a key concern across the province.
