Fireworks-related complaints dropped sharply in Brampton over New Year’s Eve, with the city reporting no fines issued and only a handful of calls received.
The City of Brampton says just seven fireworks complaints were filed with Service Brampton between Dec. 31 and Jan. 2—down roughly 60 per cent from the 24 complaints recorded over the same period last year.
While two penalty notices were issued on New Year’s Eve 2025, the city confirmed that no tickets or fines have been issued so far for New Year’s Eve 2026.
“No tickets or fines have been issued at this time, and investigations into these reports remain ongoing,” the city said in a statement to INsauga.com.
Brampton introduced a ban on personal fireworks following Diwali celebrations in 2022, when more than 1,000 complaints were lodged with city hall. Under the current rules, residents are no longer allowed to set off personal fireworks—even with a permit—on holidays such as Canada Day. Instead, permits have been replaced by city-run fireworks displays for major events and celebrations.
While fireworks complaints on New Year’s Eve have declined, enforcement challenges persist during other holidays. Calls spiked during Diwali in 2025, with 1,490 complaints filed—up sharply from 161 the previous year. The city issued more than $45,000 in fines related to fireworks and excessive noise during the multi-day Diwali celebrations in 2025.
Brampton’s fireworks ban applies to all personal pyrotechnics except sparklers. The bylaw includes the following penalties:
- Discharging or possessing fireworks without a permit: $500
- Selling, distributing, displaying or offering fireworks for sale: $1,000
- Permitting fireworks on private property without a permit: $500
- Failing to comply with an order: $1,000
In some cases, the city may issue a summons requiring an individual to appear in court, where fines can range from a minimum of $500 to a maximum of $100,000.
City officials say the sharp decline in New Year’s Eve complaints suggests improved compliance, even as enforcement remains a priority during other high-complaint periods.
