Rob Reiner, the acclaimed filmmaker and actor behind iconic films such as The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally… and This Is Spinal Tap, has died at the age of 78.
Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer, were found dead Sunday in their Brentwood home in Los Angeles. Authorities said they are investigating an apparent homicide. The Los Angeles Police Department and Fire Department responded to a medical aid call shortly after 3:30 p.m. Details of the investigation have not been released.
The son of legendary comedian Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner built a career that rivalled his father’s legacy. He first gained fame as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on All in the Family, earning multiple Emmy nominations, before becoming one of the most influential directors of his generation.
From the mid-1980s through the early 1990s, Reiner directed a string of enduring classics, including Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally…, films that continue to shape popular culture.
Beyond filmmaking, Reiner was a prominent political activist and co-founder of Castle Rock Entertainment, which helped launch major hits such as Seinfeld and The Shawshank Redemption.
