Security Heightened at Ontario Places of Worship Following Australia Mass Shooting

“Safety at sacred spaces: Ontario police move swiftly after Australia tragedy” became the unspoken message as Peel Regional Police confirmed they are actively increasing their presence at synagogues and other religious institutions in the region.

The heightened security follows a mass shooting during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday, which left at least 15 people dead and 38 injured. One suspect was taken into custody, while another was fatally shot by police. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attack as an act of antisemitism and terrorism.

In a statement posted on social media, Peel Regional Police acknowledged the fear and concern such incidents can cause locally, particularly within the Jewish community.

“Following the tragic incident at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, we acknowledge the concern this may cause for our local communities and particularly those in the Jewish community,” police said. “We want to reassure our communities that we are here for them and are actively increasing our presence at places of worship to foster a sense of security and support.”

Police emphasized that there are currently no known threats linked to the incident within the region, but said officers remain alert and are closely monitoring developments.

“At this time, there are no known related threats, but we remain vigilant,” the statement added. “Keeping our communities safe is—and always will be—our top priority. Every person deserves to feel safe, valued, and supported. No exceptions.”

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw echoed those assurances, confirming increased police visibility around Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centres across Toronto. He said the enhanced presence began Sunday and will continue throughout the Hanukkah period and the holiday season.

“As Hanukkah begins, the world is grieving today’s antisemitic terror attack in Bondi Beach,” Demkiw said. “Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and Toronto’s Jewish community. We stand against hate and terrorism.”

The attack prompted an outpouring of support from Canadian political leaders and community organizations.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canadians stand in solidarity with Jewish communities in Australia and around the world in the wake of the horrific violence. Ontario Premier Doug Ford also expressed his condolences, saying he is praying for the victims and their families and urging everyone to stand firmly against antisemitism.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said her heart is heavy following the attack, stressing that no one should ever face violence or death because of their faith.

Jewish advocacy organization B’nai B’rith Canada condemned the shooting and called on the federal government to take stronger measures to prevent similar acts of hate-driven violence in Canada.
