A Peel Regional Police officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing after a 16-year-old boy suffered a broken leg while running from police in Mississauga’s south end last summer.
According to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on July 20, when officers responded to a call about an assault at a restaurant and bar on Lakeshore Road East. Witnesses at the scene told police that the doorperson had been attacked by two individuals, who were later spotted inside another nearby restaurant.
As officers approached, one of the suspects—a 16-year-old boy—left the establishment. When an officer called out to him, the teen immediately ran away and, moments later, was struck by a westbound SUV after stepping into the roadway. The officer, who was only a few feet away when the collision occurred, quickly called for an ambulance and checked on the injured teen.
The boy was transported to hospital, where doctors confirmed he had sustained a broken left leg and a head injury.
After reviewing all available evidence, SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded there were no reasonable grounds to believe that the officer committed any criminal offence in connection with the teen’s injuries. The SIU formally closed the case, determining that the injuries were not caused by police actions.
