Hamilton, ON — A 37-year-old man has been arrested and charged after an urn containing the ashes of an infant was stolen from a mausoleum at a Hamilton cemetery, police said Thursday.
According to investigators, the incident came to light when a grieving father visited the cemetery on Sunday and discovered that his infant daughter’s urn was missing.
Following a review of surveillance footage, police identified the suspect — a man with no fixed address and a history of similar thefts. The suspect was located and arrested a few days later in Niagara Falls.
Police say they recovered the stolen urn, along with other items believed to have been taken from nearby gravesites.
The accused faces several charges, including committing an indignity to human remains, possession of property obtained by crime, and failing to comply with probation orders.
Hamilton police confirmed that the urn has been safely returned to the family, and the investigation remains ongoing.
