Prime Minister Mark Carney officially welcomed Nova Scotia MP Chris d’Entremont to the Liberal caucus on Wednesday, praising his decision to cross the floor from the Conservatives just one day after the federal budget was tabled.
The move brings the Liberals to within two seats of a majority in the House of Commons — a major political boost for Carney as he begins his cross-country effort to promote Budget 2025.
Speaking at an OC Transpo train yard in Ottawa, Carney called it “an honour” to have d’Entremont join his team, saying his addition reflects a shared vision for strong, forward-looking leadership. The Prime Minister and the Nova Scotia MP appeared together at the first public event following the budget’s release.
In a statement Tuesday, d’Entremont said his decision came from a belief that the current political climate demands collaboration and optimism. “This moment requires leadership not with complaint, but with confidence in a strong future,” he said.
D’Entremont is set to attend his first Liberal caucus meeting today as MPs from all parties gather for their weekly sessions on Parliament Hill, marking his official debut under the Liberal banner.
