Air Canada has announced a one-year extension to its Aeroplan points expiry suspension — welcome news for millions of members who rely on the popular rewards program.
The airline confirmed that Aeroplan points will not expire until November 30, 2026, giving members additional time to earn, redeem, and manage their points without the risk of losing them.
“This means that between now and November 29, 2026, any Aeroplan points which would have expired, won’t,” the company said in a statement on its website.
Background on the Pause
The temporary suspension of Aeroplan’s expiry policy was first introduced in July 2020, when pandemic restrictions made it difficult for customers to travel or redeem their points. Since then, Air Canada has extended the pause several times, most recently from November 2025 to November 2026.
Once the pause ends, Aeroplan’s normal expiration policy will resume, meaning that points will expire if members go 18 months without completing an eligible transaction.
How to Keep Your Points Active
To prevent points from expiring after November 2026, members must engage in at least one Aeroplan activity every 18 months, such as:
- Earning points through a purchase or partner program;
- Redeeming points for flights, hotels, or gift cards;
- Donating points to charity; or
- Transferring points to another Aeroplan account.
New Earning System Coming in 2026
In addition to the expiry policy update, Air Canada confirmed a major change to the way Aeroplan points are earned. Starting January 1, 2026, members will earn points based on dollars spent rather than distance traveled — a shift that aligns Aeroplan with other major global airline loyalty programs.
The company says the change aims to make rewards more transparent and reflective of customer spending rather than flight distance, offering “greater flexibility and fairness” for travelers.
