Trump Hints at 2028 Successors — and Jokes About Possible Third Term: “You’ll Have to Tell Me!”

Even as the 2028 U.S. presidential race remains years away, President Donald Trump has already begun floating names of potential successors — and stirring fresh speculation about his own political future.

In remarks made on Monday, October 27, 2025, Trump discussed several prominent Republican leaders he sees as strong contenders for the next election, notably Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Praising both men as “great personalities,” Trump said their unity could make them “unstoppable.”

“If Vance and Rubio unite, they’d be a force no one could beat,” Trump said, describing both as “very capable, very loyal, and smart people who love our country.”

But when asked about the possibility of seeking the presidency again himself, Trump offered a typically provocative response. “Am I not ruling it out? You’ll have to tell me!” he joked, before adding, “I would love to. My numbers are the best I’ve ever seen.”

The remarks sparked renewed debate over the U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which explicitly prohibits anyone from being elected president more than twice. While some political analysts have speculated about a hypothetical loophole — suggesting Trump could run as vice president and then ascend to the presidency if the elected president were to resign — Trump quickly brushed off the idea.

“I might be allowed to do it, but I won’t do it,” he said. “It’s a very cute idea, but people wouldn’t like it. It wouldn’t be right.”

Trump’s light-hearted yet suggestive comments have already ignited a wave of political chatter within Washington and beyond. As Republicans begin positioning themselves for the 2028 race, Trump’s influence over the party remains undeniable — and his words, even when half in jest, continue to shape the conversation about America’s political future.
