Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canada’s support for the peace initiative unveiled yesterday by U.S. President Donald Trump, calling it a “historic” opportunity to end the war between Israel and Hamas and to bring much-needed humanitarian relief to the people of Gaza.
In a statement released Monday evening on X, Prime Minister Carney said:
“Canada welcomes President Trump’s historic new Middle East peace plan, and we urge all parties to help it realise its full potential. As the critical next step, Hamas must immediately release all hostages. Canada stands ready to support the sustained, unimpeded, and large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid into and throughout Gaza.”
The 20-point proposal, endorsed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, requires Hamas to disarm and return all hostages in exchange for humanitarian aid and a cessation of hostilities. While the plan does not guarantee Palestinian statehood in Gaza, it leaves open the possibility for the Palestinian Authority to assume governance once specific conditions are met.
The plan also proposes that President Trump chair an international “board of peace” to oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and the gradual reduction of Israel’s military presence in the area.
Prime Minister Carney underscored that Canada’s support for the U.S. initiative is rooted in its longstanding commitment to a peaceful, negotiated two-state solution:
“We will continue our close coordination with international partners to build a just and lasting peace that builds on today’s progress — with a sovereign, democratic, and viable State of Palestine building its future in peace and security with the State of Israel.”
Carney’s remarks come just one week after Canada formally recognized the state of Palestine, joining the United Kingdom, France, and Australia in doing so ahead of the UN General Assembly.
Canada pledged to work with allies to ensure the safe, large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid and to encourage all parties to commit to lasting peace.
