Jobs Minister Urges Canada Post to Table New Offer Amid Strike

Federal Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu is calling on Canada Post to quickly return to the bargaining table with a new offer, as postal workers remain on strike following the government’s sweeping overhaul of the Crown corporation’s operations.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) launched strike action last Thursday, condemning Ottawa’s decision to end daily home mail delivery and transition nearly all households to community mailboxes. The union says the changes represent a direct attack on postal employees and undermine the quality of service to Canadians.

In an interview Monday, Hajdu stressed that while the federal government has not ruled out intervention, the immediate responsibility lies with Canada Post and CUPW to resolve the standoff.

“The onus is on the parties to come together after nearly two years of bargaining to chart a new course for the future of the postal service,” Hajdu said.

Canada Post had been preparing to table a fresh offer last week but is now revising its proposal in light of the federal government’s restructuring plans.

The strike marks the latest flashpoint in ongoing tensions between Canada Post management, the union, and the government as the postal service grapples with mounting financial challenges and declining demand for traditional mail.
