As Canada approaches the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30, Oakville-based organization Grandmother’s Voice is inviting people from across the country to take part in a powerful day of healing, reflection, and collective action.
The virtual event, called We Are One: World Peace Day, will be livestreamed on September 20, starting at 10 a.m. Co-founder Jody Harbour says the gathering is designed and led by Indigenous elders and is meant to help participants reconnect with Mother Earth, the water, their treaties, and their shared humanity.
“This event is a call in from our elders,” Harbour said. “They designed and planned the day and program so people can prepare their intention for great change and shift in humanity that our ancestors spoke of.”
This year’s gathering comes a decade after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada released its 94 calls to action, many of which remain unfulfilled. Harbour says waiting for government to lead reconciliation efforts is no longer an option. “It is up to the people to lead,” she said, encouraging participants to see the day as an opportunity to look inward, heal, and contribute to a collective future rooted in peace and unity.
Guest speakers will include elders Allen Sutherland, Gail Whitlow, Renee Thomas-Hill, Dennis Windego, and Layla Staats, along with Grandmothers Kate and Shannon, who will share stories and teachings. The event will be streamed on Grandmother’s Voice Facebook page and YouTube channel.
While attendance is free, donations are encouraged to support the speakers and can be made by visiting grandmothersvoice.com and clicking the contribute button.
