The man accused of stabbing three people at a Vancouver Chinatown festival says he was mentally and “morally” unwell when the attack happened two years ago.
Blair Donnelly, on trial for aggravated assault, admitted in court that he stabbed three people during the Light Up Chinatown festival but insisted he had been consumed by violent thoughts after believing God instructed him to cause harm. The incident occurred while Donnelly was out on a bike ride, having been released temporarily from the B.C. Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in Coquitlam.
Donnelly has pleaded not guilty. During cross-examination on the third day of his trial, Crown prosecutor Mark Myhre pressed him on whether he understood the possible outcomes depending on the verdict. Donnelly acknowledged one outcome could send him to jail, while another could return him to the psychiatric hospital.
When asked which option he would prefer, Donnelly replied that he would go where “God wants me to go.”
