New Website Lets Drivers Track Burlington Skyway Traffic in Real Time

A new website is set to make life a little easier for drivers battling congestion on the Burlington Skyway. The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) has launched the platform to provide real-time traffic data, updates on ongoing construction, and advance warnings about upcoming lane closures.

The bridge, which carries the QEW over Hamilton Harbour, has been undergoing rehabilitation in phases, with the current work beginning in May 2024 and slated to continue until late 2026. Lane closures tied to the project have caused major weekend backups for travellers heading toward Niagara, adding frustration for commuters and tourists alike.

The MTO says Alliance Verdi Civil Inc. has been contracted to complete the $multi-year rehabilitation of the 2.2-kilometre structure, while AECOM Canada ULC is handling construction oversight. Much of the work is focused on the Niagara-bound lanes, though both directions are seeing upgrades.

Officials note the construction is critical to extending the life of the bridge, which carries thousands of vehicles daily and provides a vital bypass through Hamilton and Burlington while keeping local roads free of overflow traffic.

By visiting the new website, drivers can check current traffic conditions before setting out, plan around closures, and avoid being caught in gridlock.
