Agawa Canyon Tour Train Returns for Fall Season in Northern Ontario

As fall foliage begins to transform Ontario’s landscapes, the Agawa Canyon Tour Train is preparing for its annual return, offering passengers a 10-hour rail journey through the vibrant colours of Northern Ontario.

Departing daily from downtown Sault Ste. Marie, the 114-mile excursion travels through the Canadian Shield to Agawa Canyon Park in Algoma Country. Along the way, guests experience rugged scenery that inspired Canada’s Group of Seven painters.

The train is equipped with GPS-triggered commentary narrating the history of the Ojibway, the fur trade, explorers, and early entrepreneurs. Locomotive-mounted cameras provide passengers with an engineer’s-eye view on flat-screen monitors before the train descends 500 feet into the canyon floor, formed more than 1.2 billion years ago.

Once at Agawa Canyon, guests enjoy a 90-minute stop to hike trails, climb the 300-step Lookout Trail for panoramic views, and see natural landmarks including Black Beaver Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.

Onboard dining is provided by The Kiln, operated by Searchmont Resort, featuring menu options such as smoked brisket, grilled barbecue chicken, subs, breakfast wraps, pastries, and local craft beverages. Outside food and drinks are not permitted but can be stored until arrival at the canyon or return.
