Mississauga, ON – A groundbreaking ceremony today officially launched construction on one of the most ambitious health care infrastructure projects in Canadian history. Trillium Health Partners, in collaboration with the Government of Ontario, has begun building The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital and the Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children. Once completed, the new facility will be the largest hospital in Canada and the first in Ontario to exclusively focus on the specialized health needs of women and children.
The project will more than triple the size of the current Mississauga Hospital, enabling it to serve the growing population of one of Canada’s most diverse and rapidly expanding communities. As one of the country’s busiest hospitals, Trillium Health Partners is projected to see the highest patient volume increase in Ontario over the next two decades.
This new hospital complex is designed with a digital-first, community-integrated approach to health care. Advanced technology, data-driven systems, and smart facility design will help deliver more personalized, efficient, and proactive care. Extensive consultations with health care professionals, patients, and community members guided the planning to ensure a facility that improves medical outcomes while also enhancing the patient experience. Innovations include eliminating non-clinical space, reusing the current hospital site, and using standardized room layouts to improve efficiency and flexibility.
Premier Doug Ford described the initiative as a vital component of Ontario’s $200-billion infrastructure strategy. He emphasized that the hospital will mean more doctors, more nurses, and more beds for Mississauga, along with thousands of new jobs and more than $1 billion in local economic growth over the next 10 years. Alongside the expansion of the Gilgan Family Queensway Health Centre, the region is expected to welcome over 2,800 new health professionals.
The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will feature over 950 private rooms, 23 state-of-the-art surgical suites, one of Ontario’s largest emergency departments, and comprehensive diagnostic, laboratory, and pharmacy services. Other amenities include underground parking, multi-faith spiritual spaces, and landscaped healing areas for patients and families.
The Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children will be a first-of-its-kind facility in Ontario, offering inclusive care across gynecology, reproductive health, pediatrics, and postpartum services. It will house 31 birthing suites, an expanded neonatal intensive care unit with couplet rooms for parents and infants, pediatric mental health beds, advanced surgical theatres, and child- and family-friendly environments including feeding and emergency care areas.
Construction is expected to be substantially completed by 2033, with hospital operations anticipated to begin in 2034. This historic project marks a bold step forward in delivering modern, compassionate, and inclusive care to families across the Greater Toronto Area.
