That Old Phone in Your Drawer Could Be Worth Hundreds — Here’s How to Cash In Across Ontario

Thinking of upgrading your phone or tablet? Your old device might be more valuable than you think.

Depending on the brand, model, and condition, Ontarians could pocket up to $700 by trading in old tech — and with growing options at retailers like Mobile Klinik and Staples, getting paid has never been easier.

Big Trade-In Value for In-Demand Brands

Mobile Klinik, a Canadian repair chain owned by Telus, offers trade-in credits that can be used toward newer pre-owned phones or accessories. Apple, Samsung, and Google phones tend to retain the highest resale value, according to Athyu Eleti, the company’s communications manager.

“You can get up to $630 for an iPhone 15 Pro or $430 for a Galaxy S24 Ultra,” said Eleti. “Think of your phone like a car—it loses value the moment it’s unboxed. But a screen protector and sturdy case can help you preserve its resale value.”

Customers can get a free quote in-store after a technician inspects the device, or use the Mobile Klinik Device Checkup app for an instant estimate before visiting.

Staples Offers Trade-In for E-Gift Cards

Staples Canada is also jumping into the trade-in space, now offering e-gift cards in exchange for old smartphones, laptops, and tablets through a partnership with Allstate Protection Plans.

Customers can receive:

  • Up to $600 for eligible iPhones
  • Up to $650 for MacBooks
  • Up to $600 for laptops
  • Up to $300 for Galaxy tablets

To participate, visit staples.ca/trade-in, answer a few questions, and receive a quote. Devices can be dropped off at any Staples location or shipped with a prepaid label.

Why Private Sales Can Be Risky

While private marketplaces may promise higher returns, experts warn of hidden dangers. “You don’t know where your data is going, and scams or unsafe meetups are very real risks,” Eleti said.

Instead, consider trading in through verified programs that offer secure data erasure and privacy protection.

Got a Device That’s Too Old or Broken?

Even if your phone is outdated or damaged, recycling it responsibly is the best option. Mobile Klinik offers a $10 in-store credit just for recycling — and guarantees all personal data is wiped before recycling.

Major telecom providers like Bell (Blue Box program), Rogers, and Telus also offer recycling options with incentives when signing up for new plans.

So before tossing that old phone back in a drawer, check its trade-in value — you might just walk away with a few hundred dollars and peace of mind.
