Brampton Student Wins Province-Wide Drawing Contest as City Honors Crossing Guards

BRAMPTON, ON — The City of Brampton is proudly joining communities across Ontario in recognizing School Crossing Guard Appreciation Week, taking place from June 2 to 6, 2025. This annual initiative, led by the Ontario Traffic Council (OTC), celebrates the vital contributions of crossing guards who ensure that students travel to and from school safely each day.

As part of the province-wide celebrations, the OTC’s School Crossing Programs Committee held a student drawing contest to design official thank-you cards for guards. Out of 328 submissions from 79 schools, six winning designs were selected — including one from Brampton’s own Gurnidh, a student at Khalsa Community School. Gurnidh’s artwork will be featured on cards distributed across Ontario to show appreciation for these everyday community heroes.

Brampton employs around 233 school crossing guards who help protect students, especially those in kindergarten through grade five in both the Dufferin-Peel Catholic and Peel District School Boards. The city is encouraging residents to show their support by obeying crossing guards, walking or biking to reduce traffic congestion near schools, and learning more about local school traffic safety laws.

Residents who want to give back to their community in a meaningful way are invited to consider applying for a position as a school crossing guard. It’s a rewarding role that directly contributes to child safety and the well-being of Brampton neighborhoods.
