Brampton Man Charged After Allegedly Using Fake ID to Open Bank Account

A Brampton man is facing multiple fraud-related charges after allegedly attempting to open a bank account using a fake identity at a financial institution north of the city.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), officers were called to an RBC branch on King Street North in New Tecumseth on Wednesday after staff reported a suspected fraud in progress. The location is approximately 60 kilometres north of Brampton.

Police say a man entered the bank and attempted to open an account using a fraudulent name, presenting what appeared to be a fake SIN letter and identification. During the verification process, a teller began inspecting the documents, prompting the suspect to snatch the ID back and flee the branch on foot.

Officers quickly located and arrested a suspect nearby. The individual has been identified as Vikrant Chibber, 25, of Brampton.

Chibber has been charged with the following offences:

  • Use, deals, acts on forged document
  • Possession of an identity document
  • Identity theft – obtain or possess another person’s identity information
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Obstruct peace officer

The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 8, 2025.
