MP Sidhu underscored the government’s commitment to:

  • Defending Canadian Workers and Businesses: In response to recent U.S. trade actions, Prime Minister Carney has pledged to implement retaliatory tariffs aimed at protecting Canadian industries. He emphasized that Canada must “fundamentally reimagine our economy” to succeed in a changing global landscape.
  • Safeguarding National Sovereignty: Amid escalating trade tensions, Carney has asserted that the traditional relationship with the United States is over, highlighting the need to protect Canada’s sovereignty and economic interests. He stated, “We must fundamentally reimagine our economy… to ensure that Canada can succeed in a drastically different world.”
  • Building a More Resilient Economy: The government is focused on reducing reliance on the U.S. by diversifying trade partnerships and investing in domestic industries. Carney has announced plans to eliminate internal trade barriers within Canada by July 1, aiming to create free internal trade and bolster the national economy.

MP Sidhu’s remarks reflect the government’s dedication to navigating current trade disputes while laying the groundwork for a more robust and independent Canadian economy.
