On March 26, 2025, the Ontario Legislature hosted a vibrant celebration in honor of Hellenic Heritage Month, recognizing the profound contributions of the Greek community to the province’s cultural and social fabric. The event was organized by MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos, a dedicated advocate for Hellenic heritage and the driving force behind the 2019 proclamation of March as Hellenic Heritage Month in Ontario.
The evening brought together dignitaries, community leaders, and citizens to commemorate the rich history and enduring legacy of Hellenes in Ontario. Among the esteemed attendees was Minister of Immigration Graham McGregor, who emphasized the importance of multiculturalism and the significant role that Greek Canadians have played in shaping Ontario’s diverse society.
MPP Triantafilopoulos expressed her gratitude, stating, “As a proud member of Ontario’s Hellenic community, it is always a special privilege to stand with you to celebrate Greek Independence Day.” She highlighted the community’s journey and its substantial contributions across various sectors, including entrepreneurship, education, public service, and the arts.
Minister McGregor acknowledged the Greek community’s dedication to preserving their heritage while actively contributing to Ontario’s prosperity. He remarked on the shared values of democracy and freedom that unite Canada and Greece, reinforcing the strong bonds between the two cultures.
The celebration featured traditional Greek music and dance performances, symbolizing the vibrancy and resilience of Hellenic culture. Attendees had the opportunity to engage with cultural exhibits showcasing the history and achievements of Greek Canadians.
Hellenic Heritage Month, established through the Hellenic Heritage Month Act, 2019, provides an opportunity for all Ontarians to learn about and appreciate the significant impact of the Greek community in the province. March 25th also marks Greek Independence Day, commemorating Greece’s declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1821.
