Empowering Residents to Save Lives in Emergencies
The City of Brampton is stepping up public safety by becoming one of the first municipalities in Ontario to introduce Stop the Bleed® kits across key public spaces. This life-saving initiative is part of a pilot project that aims to equip residents with the tools they need to respond quickly and effectively in severe bleeding emergencies—even before first responders arrive.
Installed at City Hall, Cassie Campbell Community Centre, and Gore Meadows Community Centre, each kit includes vital medical supplies, such as a tourniquet designed to stop life-threatening limb bleeding by applying targeted pressure. The kits are located next to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for easy, fast access during critical moments.
What’s Inside the Kit?
Each Stop the Bleed® kit contains:
- A commercial-grade tourniquet
- Gauze and wound-packing materials
- Compression bandages
- Trauma shears
- Instruction cards
These tools empower bystanders to act immediately—buying precious time until professional help arrives.
The Program Behind the Kits
Stop the Bleed®, launched by the American College of Surgeons after the 2012 Sandy Hook tragedy, is an internationally recognized campaign aimed at training the public to control life-threatening bleeding—similar to how CPR is taught for cardiac emergencies.
The City of Brampton is proud to pilot this initiative as it explores expanding the program city-wide, ensuring more residents have access to critical first-response tools.
