Canada Tops G7 Happiness—but It’s a Long Fall from Glory

Canada’s got bragging rights as the happiest G7 nation in the latest World Happiness Report, but don’t break out the champagne just yet—the country’s cheer has dimmed over the years. Clocking in at No. 18 globally, Canada edges out Germany (No. 22), the U.K. (No. 23), and the U.S. (No. 24)—the latter hitting its gloomiest rank ever. Finland, meanwhile, basks in the top spot for an eighth straight year.

Edited by a Simon Fraser University professor in Vancouver, the report—produced by Oxford’s Wellbeing Research Centre and partners—shows Canada’s slide from its No. 6 perch in 2013. It’s not alone: Western industrial nations have been trending grumpier since the 2005-2010 heyday. So, while Canada leads the G7 pack in smiles, its happiness crown’s looking a little tarnished.
