Brampton Religious Leader Faces Sexual Assault Charge After Home Ceremony

A Brampton man who served as a religious leader for years has been charged with sexual assault following an alleged attack during a private ritual at a woman’s home.

Peel Regional Police report that on March 3, the suspect visited the residence to conduct a religious ceremony. During the visit, he allegedly assaulted the woman, whose identity and age remain undisclosed. Authorities have also withheld specifics about the nature of the rituals involved.

The accused, identified as 69-year-old Ashok Kumar—also known as Ashok Sharma—was apprehended on March 7. He now faces one count of sexual assault and is set to appear in Brampton court at a later date.

Investigators highlight Kumar’s longstanding role in the local religious community, raising concerns that others may have been targeted. “Given his position, we’re worried there could be more victims out there,” police said in a statement.

The Special Victims Unit is urging anyone with information to come forward, either directly at 905-453-2121, ext. 3460, or anonymously via Peel Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.peelcrimestoppers.ca.
