City of Brampton Hosts Annual Iftar Party, Bringing Together Community Leaders and Residents

The City of Brampton held its annual Iftar celebration today, a vibrant and heartfelt event marking the breaking of the fast during the holy month of Ramadan. Hosted at a city venue, the gathering welcomed local residents, Muslim community leaders, Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs), Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, and city councillors. The event highlighted Brampton’s commitment to inclusivity, cultural celebration, and community unity.

The Iftar, held at sunset, was a free event organized by the City of Brampton, with limited spots filled quickly following an RSVP invitation issued on February 27, 2025, via @CityBrampton on X: “You’re invited! On March 5, join us for a special Iftar with Mayor @PatrickBrownOnt and Council as we break fast and celebrate #Brampton’s vibrant and diverse community.” Mayor Patrick Brown opened the evening, stating in a post on X at 7:52 PM PST, “Ramadan Mubarak, #Brampton! It was a beautiful evening of community and connection at our annual @CityBrampton Iftar. The event brought residents together to share in prayer, reflection and a delicious Iftar meal at sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. We build harmony.”

The evening commenced with the call to prayer, followed by the traditional breaking of the fast with dates and water. A diverse Iftar meal followed, featuring dishes such as biryanis, kebabs, and desserts like baklava and gulab jamun, reflecting the culinary heritage of Brampton’s Muslim community. Shafqat Ali, MP for Brampton Centre, attended and shared his perspective: “This Iftar is a powerful reminder of the strength in our diversity. Bringing together people from all walks of life to share a meal and reflect during Ramadan is what makes Brampton special. I’m proud to represent a community that values unity and mutual respect.”

Navjit Kaur Brar, Councillor for Wards 2 and 6 and a trailblazer as Canada’s first turban-wearing Sikh woman elected to office, added, “As a proud Bramptonian, I see tonight’s Iftar as a beautiful opportunity to connect with our Muslim residents and celebrate the spirit of togetherness that defines our city. It’s a privilege to break bread with our community during this sacred time.” Rod Power, Councillor for Wards 7 and 8, also spoke at the event, saying, “This Iftar is a shining example of Brampton’s strength as a united community. It’s not just about sharing a meal—it’s about building bridges and ensuring every resident feels included, which is at the heart of what we do as councillors.”

Charmaine Williams, MPP for Brampton Centre and Associate Minister of Women’s Social and Economic Opportunity, emphasized the event’s significance: “Ramadan is a time of reflection and compassion, and tonight’s Iftar embodies Brampton’s heart. As MPP, I’m committed to supporting events that bring us together, ensuring every voice in our diverse community is heard and valued.” The participation of these leaders underscored the strong ties between Brampton’s elected officials and its residents.

The event also featured local Muslim leaders offering prayers and reflections on Ramadan’s themes of fasting, charity, and spiritual growth. MPs, MPPs, and councillors mingled with attendees, fostering dialogue about community initiatives. The venue was adorned with crescent moons and stars, creating a festive ambiance that complemented the warm interactions.

This Iftar celebration not only marked a key moment in Ramadan but also showcased Brampton’s dedication to harmony and inclusion. As the holy month continues, the city anticipates further opportunities to celebrate its diverse population.
