Brampton’s Made in Canada Policy: Boosting Your Economy, Protecting Your Jobs

Today, Mayor Patrick Brown, Regional Councillor Rowena Santos, and Members of Council unveiled a game-changing Made in Canada procurement policy, putting Brampton residents and Canadian businesses first in the face of potential U.S. tariffs. This initiative isn’t just a policy—it’s your opportunity to see more jobs stay local, your tax dollars fuel Canadian innovation, and your community thrive as part of a united national effort.

“Brampton is stepping up for you,” said Councillor Rowena Santos, Vice-Chair of Economic Development and FCM Board Member. “As the first city to champion a Made in Canada approach in January, we’re now rallying municipalities nationwide to join our ‘We are Team Canada’ petition. Together, we wield over $30 billion in annual purchasing power—according to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities—that can keep Canadian workers employed and businesses booming. By choosing Canadian goods and services, we’re safeguarding your livelihoods and strengthening local economies coast to coast.”

Here’s how this benefits you: Brampton is reviewing all existing contracts to redirect spending from U.S.-owned firms to Canadian companies wherever legally possible. Moving forward, an updated Purchasing Bylaw will prioritize Canadian suppliers, barring U.S.-owned entities and their subsidiaries from City procurements for the duration of any tariffs. That means more opportunities for Canadian entrepreneurs, more stability for workers, and a stronger economic foundation for your family.

The City also launched BramptonforCanada.ca, a dynamic platform where you can join the movement. Sign the petition, urge your local municipality to adopt this ‘Made in Canada’ Cities strategy, and amplify your voice in support of homegrown innovation. Plus, tap into the Tariff Resource Hub at investbrampton.ca/tariffs for tools and insights to navigate these changes with confidence.

“Brampton’s policy is your shield against trade uncertainty,” said Mayor Patrick Brown. “If U.S. tariffs threaten our economy, we’re ready to fight back—keeping your dollars in Canada, investing in your community, and inspiring other cities to follow suit. This is about building a future you can count on.”

Join Brampton in leading the charge. Together, we’re Team Canada—delivering real benefits to your doorstep.
