Donald Trump Defends Wayne Gretzky Amid Backlash from Canadian Fans

U.S. President Calls Gretzky ‘The Greatest Canadian,’ Addresses Speculation on Canada Becoming the 51st State

U.S. President Donald Trump took to social media on Wednesday to defend hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, following growing criticism from Canadian fans over his ties to Trump and the United States.

In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump praised Gretzky’s legacy and emphasized that he does not want Canadians to turn against the hockey icon due to their friendship.

“He’s the greatest Canadian of them all, and I am therefore making him a ‘free agent’ because I don’t want anyone in Canada to say anything bad about him,” Trump wrote.

Trump also acknowledged Gretzky’s unwavering loyalty to Canada but reiterated his stance that the country would benefit from becoming America’s 51st state.

“Wayne is my friend, and he wants to make me happy, and is therefore somewhat ‘low key’ about Canada remaining a separate Country, rather than becoming a cherished and beautiful 51st State,” Trump’s post read.

Gretzky’s association with Trump has drawn criticism in Canada, particularly after his appearances at key political events such as the U.S. president’s election victory party and inauguration. The controversy escalated further after Canada’s victory over the U.S. in the 4 Nations Face-Off final, a moment of national pride for Canadians amid Trump’s repeated remarks suggesting annexation.

Serving as Team Canada’s honorary captain for the tournament final, Gretzky has been viewed by some fans as contradicting his national allegiance by maintaining ties with Trump. A petition launched last week has called for Edmonton’s Wayne Gretzky Drive to be renamed, arguing that his association with Trump makes him an unfit figure for such an honor.

The debate continues to unfold as Canadians react to Trump’s remarks and Gretzky’s longstanding relationship with the former president.
