MINNEAPOLIS — A 37-year-old woman was fatally shot on Wednesday during an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operation in a residential neighbourhood of Minneapolis, triggering widespread protests, sharp political reactions, and calls for independent investigations into the incident.
The shooting occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. during a traffic stop linked to a large-scale federal immigration enforcement operation underway in the Twin Cities. The woman was shot while inside her vehicle, in the presence of a family member, and later died at the scene. The incident was captured on multiple bystander videos, which quickly circulated online and drew hundreds of protesters to the area.
Federal officials stated that the ICE officer acted in self-defence, alleging the woman attempted to use her vehicle against officers. Senior officials described the incident as a necessary defensive response and confirmed that the FBI would review the case.
Local leaders strongly disputed this account. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the shooting as reckless and unnecessary, saying it reflected the dangers of aggressive federal enforcement tactics. He criticized the deployment of thousands of federal agents in the city, stating that it has fueled fear, distrust, and instability in immigrant communities. The mayor publicly called for federal immigration officers to leave Minneapolis.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described the incident as tragic, predictable, and avoidable, urging calm while affirming the public’s right to protest peacefully. He said state authorities are prepared to assist with crowd control if necessary and confirmed that both state and federal agencies will take part in the investigation.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the woman was blocking a roadway when a federal officer approached her vehicle, which then began to move. Shots were fired shortly thereafter, and the vehicle crashed nearby. Local police did not characterize the incident as an attempted attack.
The shooting comes amid an intensified federal immigration crackdown in major U.S. cities. Community leaders, civil rights advocates, and elected officials have raised concerns about the scale and methods of the operation, warning of escalating tensions and potential further loss of life.
By Wednesday evening, vigils and demonstrations were held near the site of the shooting, with protesters demanding accountability and an end to federal immigration raids in the city. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
