WestJet Airlines has announced the launch of a new UltraBasic fare category, eliminating the free carry-on bag and other traditional perks previously included in its basic fare. The new UltraBasic tier, the lowest of seven offered by the airline, is designed to provide lower-priced tickets across its routes.
Travellers opting for the UltraBasic fare will be assigned seats at the back of the aircraft, with an additional charge for selecting a seat during check-in. Boarding for these passengers will occur last. While carry-on bags are not included, passengers can still bring a personal item to be stored under the seat. For trans-ocean routes, a carry-on bag is included.
WestJet’s decision follows the closure of its ultra low-cost airline Swoop and the acquisition of Sunwing Airlines, reaffirming its commitment to offering affordable travel options. Notably, WestJet is not the first Canadian airline to introduce a no-carry-on fare, as Flair Airlines has a similar policy for its standard fare.
