Trudeau Warns Canadians About Leaders Denying Foreign Interference

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has cautioned Canadians to be cautious of political leaders who claim their parties have not been affected by foreign interference.

Speaking at the Ukraine peace summit at the Burgenstock Resort on Sunday, June 16, 2024, Trudeau addressed concerns about foreign interference in Canadian politics. This comes in light of NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh’s recent comments, following his review of the classified, unredacted version of the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) report. Singh suggested he had no concerns about foreign interference within his caucus.

Two weeks ago, NSICOP, a bipartisan committee of MPs and senators, released a heavily redacted report. The document, based on intelligence, suggested that certain parliamentarians might have been “semi-witting or witting” participants in foreign states’ efforts to meddle in Canadian politics.

When asked if members of his party were implicated in the NSICOP report, Trudeau did not provide a direct answer.

“I am implying that interference in our parliamentarians goes beyond party lines, from many different sources,” he stated.
