Today, Canada pays its final respects to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in a state funeral at Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica, starting at 11 a.m. EDT.
The ceremony follows a week of commemorations in both Montreal and Ottawa, including tributes from federal leaders and a public lying in state.
Guests, including dignitaries and Mulroney’s family, will gather to hear eulogies from notable figures, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and former U.S. Secretary of State James Baker.
The service, expected to last two hours, will blend religious and artistic elements and conclude with a 19-gun salute from the Old Port of Montreal.
Following the funeral, a private burial will be held for Mulroney, who passed away in February at the age of 84.
Mulroney’s legacy as a formidable leader, who left an indelible mark on Canadian politics, will be remembered by all who attend.
