Sniffed Out Before Takeoff: Dog Foils $10K Cannabis Smuggling Plot at Ottawa Airport”

A Mississauga man’s attempt to smuggle a large haul of cannabis to Europe came to an abrupt end at Ottawa’s airport, thanks to the sharp nose of a detector dog. The man was sentenced to an 18-month conditional sentence after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis for export and possession of more than 30 grams of dried cannabis.

The incident took place on November 9, 2023, when the traveller was preparing to board a flight from Ottawa Macdonald-Cartier International Airport to Birmingham, England, with a stop in Paris. Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers pulled him aside for a routine check. A trained detector dog flagged two suitcases, prompting a detailed inspection. Inside, officers uncovered 37 kilograms of dried cannabis, which was then seized along with the passenger.

According to authorities, the man admitted during a joint CBSA-RCMP interview that he had been offered $2,000 to cover his flight and promised $10,000 upon successful delivery of the drugs. The CBSA and RCMP conducted a joint investigation into the smuggling attempt, which concluded earlier this year with the guilty plea on May 8 and sentencing on September 11.

Officials say criminal organizations often target vulnerable individuals by luring them with money or travel perks in exchange for smuggling drugs. CBSA officers rely on specialized training and tools—like detector dog teams—to intercept contraband at Canada’s borders before it can leave or enter the country.
