Siblings from Brampton Charged in Peel Police Investigation of Auto Crime Ring

A Brampton woman finds herself facing charges related to auto crime alongside her brother as Peel Regional Police continue to probe an unlicensed car dealership.

The Peel Regional Police commercial auto crime bureau arrested Monifa Taffe-Hylton, 25, of Brampton on Thursday, charging her with 36 counts, including uttering forged documents and trafficking of stolen goods. The charges are linked to an investigation into a broker involved in facilitating the sale and transfer of vehicles.

Her brother, Milton Hylton, 24, was apprehended earlier this month and slapped with 168 auto crime charges.

According to police, between June 2023 and earlier this year, Hylton and others allegedly conducted numerous fraudulent transactions through the Ministry of Transportation and Service Ontario, involving over 100 vehicles.

Investigators suspect that Hylton exploited loopholes in Service Ontario procedures that permit “authorized” individuals to conduct third-party transactions for vehicle registration, with several vehicles allegedly identified as re-VIN vehicles.

Peel police have reached out to various individuals and businesses allegedly linked to vehicles registered under their names without proper authorization.

“This investigation remains ongoing, and investigators anticipate additional arrests and charges,” Peel police stated in a news release. “This is a large-scale crime affecting many vehicles in multiple jurisdictions across Ontario. Investigators are appealing to the public for assistance in locating additional victims and vehicles.”

Individuals who have engaged in transactions with Hylton, Taffe-Hylton, or the company “Royalty in the Building” are urged to contact the commercial auto crime bureau at 905-453-3311, Ext. 3313, or autocrime@peelpolice.ca.
