Safety Lapses Lead to $225,000 Fine for Brampton Brick Company

Brampton Brick Limited has been fined $225,000 following a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a worker at its manufacturing facility in Brampton, Ontario. The incident occurred on June 8, 2023, when a worker was assisting in the removal of cement buildup on equipment in the plant’s mixer area. While carrying a hammer, the worker climbed onto a mud conveyor, unaware that a skip hoist—a device used for lifting materials—was set to automatic mode and that the hoist bucket was positioned overhead. The hoist automatically engaged, causing the bucket to lower and fatally injure the worker.

An investigation by Ontario’s Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development revealed that the mixer area lacked adequate machine guarding, a violation of safety regulations. Brampton Brick Limited pleaded guilty in Provincial Offences Court and was fined $225,000 by Justice of the Peace Peter . Additionally, a 25% victim fine surcharge was imposed, as mandated by the Provincial Offences Act, to support a provincial fund assisting victims of crime.

The name of the deceased worker has not been released. This incident underscores the critical importance of adhering to workplace safety protocols to prevent such tragedies.
