Renowned Punjabi Poet Dr. Surjit Patar Passes Away at 79

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Dr. Surjit Patar, a distinguished Punjabi poet and a beacon of modern literature. Dr. Patar, who was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri in 2012, passed away on May 11, 2024, at the age of 79.

Dr. Patar’s literary journey commenced in the 1960s, distinguishing him as a poet of profound depth and sensitivity. His literary contributions, including works like “Hawa Vich Likhe Harf,” “Birkh Arz Kare,” and “Lafzaan Di Dargah,” have significantly influenced Punjabi literature. Born in Pattar Kalan village in Jalandhar, Dr. Patar’s impact extended beyond his poetry. He was a professor of Punjabi at Punjab Agricultural University and led the Punjabi Sahit Akademi. He also served as the chairman of the Punjab Arts Council, advocating for Punjabi culture and arts.

Dr. Patar’s legacy is not limited to his poems; he was also celebrated for his translations of global literary figures into Punjabi and his adaptations of international plays. His writings, infused with a serene and reflective quality, mirrored his persona—gentle and profound.
